Assumptions and methodology

Transparent calculation notes for EPF Calculator.

Methodology notes

Formula used

EPF balance after the EPS share, with yearly interest credit
Closing balance = opening + your contributions + employer EPF share + interest; interest = Σ month-opening balances × rate ÷ 12, credited yearly

Your statutory share and any VPF go to EPF. For EPS members under 58, 8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000 (at most ₹2,083 a month) of the employer's share goes to the pension scheme and the rest to EPF. Interest follows EPF Scheme, 2026 para 42.

Methodology

  • Work out monthly employee, VPF and employer contributions from Basic + DA (capped at ₹25,000 if chosen), in whole rupees.
  • Send 8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000 (at most ₹2,083 a month) to EPS while you are an EPS member and under 58.
  • Calculate interest on each month's opening balance and credit it once at year end, rounded to the rupee.
  • Raise salary once a year.

Core assumptions

  • The EPF rate and the ₹25,000 ceiling stay the same in future years.
  • Salary grows at the selected increment rate.
  • Contributions continue every month until retirement age.

Not included

  • The EPS pension amount, the higher-pension option, job changes, withdrawals and tax on interest above ₹2,50,000 a year are not modelled.
  • EPFO's credit timing and rounding can differ slightly.

About EPF Calculator

Guide

1What is EPF (Employees' Provident Fund)?

The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a mandatory retirement savings scheme run by the EPFO. Since July 2026 (notified 29 June 2026) it is governed by the EPF Scheme, 2026 under the Code on Social Security, 2020.

You contribute 12% of your Basic + DA every month. Your employer also contributes 12%, but if you are a member of the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), 8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000 (at most ₹2,083 a month) goes to EPS for your pension, and only the rest reaches your EPF account.

2EPF Contribution Breakdown

  • Your contribution: 12% of Basic + DA (10% in notified establishments), all credited to EPF. You can add more through VPF, up to 100% of Basic + DA.
  • Employer contribution: 12% (or 10%). For EPS members, 8.33% of wages up to the ₹25,000 ceiling (at most ₹2,083 a month) goes to EPS, and the rest to EPF. That is 3.67% of wages at ₹25,000 or less, and more above that. Non-members, who first joined on or after 1 September 2014 with Basic + DA above ₹15,000 and still earn above ₹25,000, get the full employer share in EPF. EPS contributions stop at 58.
  • Wage ceiling: ₹25,000 a month from 17 September 2026 (₹15,000 before). Everyone earning up to the ceiling is an EPS member. Employers may restrict contributions to the ceiling.
  • Interest rate: 8.25% for FY 2025-26, ratified in June 2026. It is declared every year.
  • Tax: Interest on your own contributions above ₹2,50,000 a year (₹5,00,000 if your employer does not contribute) is taxable. This calculator shows interest before tax.

3EPF Interest Calculation

EPFO works out interest on the monthly running balance and credits it once a year, on the last day of the financial year (EPF Scheme, 2026, para 42), so interest compounds yearly.

Yearly interest = sum of the 12 month-opening balances × annual rate ÷ 12

Your balance at the start of the year earns interest for 12 months. Each month's contribution starts earning from the following month. The year's interest, rounded to the nearest rupee, is added at year end.

4How to Use This EPF Calculator

  • Step 1: Enter your monthly basic salary and dearness allowance.
  • Step 2: Choose your PF rate, any VPF, whether you are an EPS member, and whether your employer contributes on the full wage or the ₹25,000 ceiling.
  • Step 3: Enter your current age, the age you plan to retire and your current EPF balance.
  • Step 4: Set the yearly salary increase and EPF rate, then review the corpus, the EPS share and the yearly table.

5EPF Withdrawal Rules

  • On retirement: withdraw your full EPF balance.
  • After losing your job: up to 75% of the balance straight away, and the rest after 12 months of continuous unemployment.
  • Partial withdrawals: grouped into essential needs (illness, education, marriage), housing, and special circumstances. You need 12 months of service, and 25% of your contributions must stay in the account. Education can be claimed up to 10 times and marriage up to 5 times.
  • Transfer: your UAN stays with you, so transfer the balance when you change jobs.
  • Tax: withdrawals are tax-free after 5 years of continuous service (including transferred earlier service); earlier withdrawals are taxable.

These rules changed in 2025–26; check the EPFO member portal before applying.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ
Can I contribute more than 12% to EPF?
Yes, through the Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF), up to 100% of your Basic + DA. Your employer doesn't have to match it. VPF earns the EPF rate, but interest on your total contributions above ₹2,50,000 a year is taxable. Try it with the VPF field above.
Is EPF interest tax-free?
Interest on your own contributions up to ₹2,50,000 a year (₹5,00,000 if the employer does not contribute) is tax-free. Interest on contributions above that limit is taxable as per your income slab.
What is UAN and why is it important?
UAN (Universal Account Number) is a unique 12-digit number assigned to each EPF member. It remains the same throughout your career, even when you change employers, and helps in seamless transfer and tracking of your EPF balance.
Why is part of my employer's contribution missing from my EPF balance?
If you are an EPS member, 8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000 (at most ₹2,083 a month) of your employer's contribution goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme. It builds your EPS pension instead of your EPF balance, and it stops at 58. Your passbook shows it in a separate pension column.
Can I withdraw EPF for a home loan down payment?
Yes. Buying, building or renovating a home counts as a 'housing needs' withdrawal. Under the rules approved in October 2025 you need 12 months of service and must keep 25% of your contributions in the account. Check the EPFO member portal for the amount you can claim.
What happens to EPF if I leave India permanently?
If you leave India permanently, you can withdraw your entire EPF balance including the employer's share and interest. You need to submit Form 19 along with proof of emigration to claim the full balance.
